Professional Development Institute & Girls’ Town- Doing Good

Professional Development Institute & Girls’ Town
Address: 89 Maxfield Avenue, Kingston 13

Contributed by Faun Fuller, Public Relations Officer

The Professional Development Institute(PDI) & Girls’ Town was born out of a concern of Odette Josephs, wife of a local businessman. Her concern arose from the increased number of women in Kingston who were not successful at completing secondary level education thereby lessening their opportunities to gain places in the job market. Mrs. Joseph, along with a group of other concerned citizens, leased a plot of land at Maxfield Avenue and began what was then called Girls’ Town Jamaica.

The programme was geared towards training ladies in garment construction, cookery and home economics. As a result of of this training many of the graduates were placed in jobs locally and overseas. Over the years the Centre evolved into a Community-Based project of HEART Trust, now offering NCTVET Certification in four skills, to both men and women.

What PDI offers:

A day care centre (on the grounds) specially built for learners of PDI who have children 0-3 years and desire an affordable place to leave their children while in training.
A canteen service provides hot food daily at an economic price.
Access to first aid nursing and health care, as PDI is located just next to the community Health Centre, which provides convenient services to our learners.
Counseling and coping services by trained professionals.
